‘The Cursed School’ by Emma C
“Wait up, I’m just putting my blazer on!” shouted Emma from the PE changing room. She quickly put it on and stuffed her coat in her bag.
“You know, I just realized…”
She stopped midway through her sentence; Poppy wasn’t in the hallway.
“Poppy?” she called. Emma carried on walking down the hallway, expecting to see her chatting with someone. No one was there. If fact, she couldn’t see any other students, or teachers. After some consideration, she assumed she was late so rushed off to the main door to get out of school. She tried to open it, but it wouldn’t budge. She tried again, but it still wouldn’t open. Wow, she really was late. She walked to the other door across the hall, when suddenly the lights exploded and went out. Glass shattered to the ground and Emma screamed. It was now pitch black.
“Emma?” said a distance voice, yet it sounded so close.
“Poppy! Poppy where are you?”
Something went past Emma’s leg, which made her jump.
“ Poppy?”
She spun around, trying to find her, but she saw something else. Just a few meters away, a pair of shining eyes glared down at her. She screamed again and sprinted in the other direction. Having no idea where she was going, Emma crashed into a wall and was paralyzed for a few seconds. Once she regained sight, she felt around her surroundings. Soon she felt a door handle and pulled the door open. She ran through it and felt the grass beneath her feet. How come it is so dark outside? Last time she checked it was 3:30.
She stopped for a second to breathe, but she didn’t have long. Looking down at her blazer, there was a large gash in it, right next to her pocket. She reached her hand in it and felt around for what was missing. She found her phone and took it out, but just as she turned it on and pressed the torch, the screen went blank.
“Ugh!” she muttered.
After putting her phone back in her pocket, she gazed up at the stars. Except, there were no stars.
The door behind her creaked open. Frantically, she started running again, her hands out in front of her this time to make sure she didn’t bump into anything. Twigs and leaves crunched under her feet, and the cold air made her nose run. She didn’t think she could keep going anymore, she’d just had PE. As she was giving up hope, Emma could make out the outline of the B block in front of her, and one of the classrooms had a light on! There must be a teacher in there. With a clear destination, she used all her energy and made her legs keep moving until she got to the B block.
Once she got there, she swung open the door and ran up the stairs to where she had seen the classroom with the light on. She ran past the lockers and the bathrooms and went straight into the classroom and slammed the door shut behind her. Hobbling over, she scanned the classroom. A teacher was sitting in a chair facing the board. Emma recognized them almost immediately, due to their familiar haircut.
“Mr McGarvey!” Emma exclaimed.
There was no response, so she tried again.
“Mr McGarvey?”
Again, there was no response. Slowly, she walked over to the desk and carefully spun his chair around. Emma jumped back in shock and started to gag. He sat there, motionless, with a massive gash through his chest. Blood was dripping down onto his legs, and his clothes were torn and muddy. She sat there on the floor, on the verge of a panic attack.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps echoing through the hallway. She frantically hid behind a desk knowing in her heart it wouldn’t be enough. The door creaked open. Heavy footsteps and the sound of Emma’s heart beating was the only thing you could hear. She tried to calm down, but how could she? She closed her eyes, sweat dripping from her forehead.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Then she suddenly heard a bang, and the table collapsed on top of her. She let out a final scream, then everything went dark.
